Sustainability in the garden is a wonderful way to become better stewards of the land by preserving and protecting precious resources for future generations. There is a lot of creative ideas and materials that may be incorporated into a space that will reduce the environmental footprint in the garden.
Composting has such wonderful benefits with improving soil tilth. When adding organic matter to the soil structure there is an amazing process that happens as the organic material decomposes providing a food source for beneficial fungi and bacteria to colonize. Soil has such a significant impact on all living organisms. When a sample of soil is viewed under a microscope the colonies of micro and macro organisms can be seen that play a vital role to the health of our plants and ourselves. There is a reduction in our landfills when families compost their food waste. A composting bin is a great addition to help store and assist with composting efforts that can be used in the garden.
Conservation of water is another aspect to consider when designing and implementing a sustainable approach to a garden space. Collecting water in rain barrels that may be used to irrigate plants in the landscape is one way to repurpose water runoff. Designing a drip system that will provide water to each plant will have lower water use and help in reduction of weed propagation.
Rain gardens are a great way to direct storm water run off from impervious surfaces such as roofs, driveways and parking lots. This will help replenish the water table and decrease the amount of water into the storm system. A rain garden can be designed to look esthetically pleasing and provide a positive impact to help manage water runoff. There are various native plants that can be used to embellish a rain garden that will do well in saturated as well as dry soils with an added benefit for birds and beneficial insects.
Having an organic garden is a great way to provide wholesome food for the family from farm to fork while providing a habitat for beneficial insects and birds to assist in keeping unwanted pest in check. At times these undesirable insects set out to destroy our crops and our beneficial insect population can’t keep up with them. There are natural based fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides that have been derived of natural origin that can be used as an alternative to man made synthetic products. If you are searching for a natural based product you may come across an OMRI label that stands for The Organic Material Review Institute that is a private nonprofit organization that determines if a product meets the standards and approval to be used in organic farming practices.
Incorporating biodiversity in the garden with companion plantings will help increase the growth and productivity. The mixture of plants will help attract beneficial insects and make it harder for unwanted pest to find their way to your garden. There are many benefits of companion planting such as pest repellent attributes that will protect neighboring plants. The practice of stacking may be implemented. Stacking is a term used in permaculture that resembles growth patterns of plants in nature. Creating a canopy with layers of various understory plants can help form microclimates for individual plants to thrive. When stacking various plants, you can grow more of them in an area and have a greater yield.
Sustainability is a culture that is gaining momentum with the ever increasing demand of our resources. When this knowledge is shared with others and generations to come it becomes a way of life which makes our future impact beneficial for all.
